"When You Were Very Small" Poetry Collection

Students in English 9, 10, and 11 each wrote five-line poems about their earliest memories. The bell ringer prompt was: "Try to recall your earliest memory. Who was there? Where were you? What were you doing? Construct a five-line poem about this memory with as much description as possible." Each student posted his/her poem as a comment to this blog entry. Enjoy!

Prompt taken from The Daily Spark: Poetry Warm-up Activities.

  1. I had a puppy named Lizzy
To sneak her food from Mcdonalds was probably,
    A bad idea.
    I don't believe I ever told
So my memory is all mine

  2. Grandmother and Grandfather around me
Looking closely at my curious features.
Hugging and kissing me they adore me.
I hug and kiss back while giggling.
Reaching for there embrace they accept me and promise to never let go.

  5. January 26, 1998, a new baby brother.
A new baby meant I didn't get all the attention anymore.
I was just a few blocks away from the hospital.
I got to meet Dustin Dwight Michael Halverson.
He was so tiny and all I did was hold him, I was so happy.

running up a hill to the playground.
The sun was shining and my pigtails were a mess.
Mom was carrying the laundry off the line and
I was excited to play with my sister Jess.

    Our classroom
Pretending to pump gas in our tricycles and driving off squeaking horns.
Trying to drive faster than the child in front of us.

I was diapers and a large white shirt and only one and half years old
Walking into the large hut-like home of my Tia Mago, I felt the cool dirt floor underneath me. I recall Papà holding up a baby goat to the family, laughter was everywhere. Then the goat began to urinate and I stared from way down below, wondering what the big uproar was about.

I was on the blanket outside,
My brother, on the tonka machine
I wanted to ride it so badly,
    soon it was my turn,
    ...the battery was dead

  10. Dylan- I remember being picked up and almost thrown into a room of snakes. Scared and terrified of all the huge snakes. I wasn't ready to die in a room of snakes. It was a horrible joke that he did. I hate that man.

New words from time to time
Not understanding such big words to my little mind...
    "Melina dont interrupt Im talking."
But too curious I just had to ask what interrupt meant without stopping..
"That means don't talk when I am, now be quiet if you can."

The dog barks and my sister tells it to be quiet.

It was the middle of October and they were going buy me a costume.
As I was looking at costumes something caught my eye,
It was a nice knight costume and my parents bought for me.
After buying the costume we went waiting for Halloween to come.

Remembering the days when we had a sandbox in an old house and remembering the smile and laughters of the cousins long gone, and even if I can't see them in person I will be able to hear their voice on the telephone. Remembering the good times I had with cousins when we would go to a women's house to take apples from her tree and taking some home.
