"Family isn't about whose blood you have. It's about who you care about."
– Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of South Park), as said by the character Kyle.

Write at least 7 well-developed sentences expressing your views of family based upon the South Park quote above. Use examples and personal experiences to develop and support your assertions.

Due Tuesday, January 8.

On Tuesday, you will be responding to at least one peer's assertions about the definition of family as he/she understands it.

This is a participation grade.

  1. To me, family can be who you feel most comfortable with; blood related or not. Naturally, intermediate families are close because members of the intermediate family live together and engage in activities together. They care about each other because they love each other. For example, in band, we are considered a family because we go through every concert, trip, and piece together. Without one member of the band, we don't sound as whole as we did with everybody. Like with blood related family, when one member dies or leaves, the family just doesn't feel whole until they find a way to cope with the loss. A lot of my friends I consider to be like family to me because we've been together through many obstacles in our lives, and we'd do anything to keep each other safe.

  2. I agree with Kyle's quote. There are many people in my life that I consider my family that aren't blood related. I care about these people just as much as I care about my blood related family. My relationship with my intermediate family like my brothers and parents are a little different than the others but they are still my family. I believe that my son's parents are like my family. They have done a lot for me and I care about them. Also my friends are like my family. They are always there for me and I would do a lot for them. I think that there are a lot of different kinds of families you can have as a person and it doesn't always mean the people that are blood related.

  3. If you were not to care about anyone you would probably not have a family. You need to care and love in order to have a family. If I didn't love or care for my family I don't think they would love and care for me which wouldn't make us a family. Even if you share the same blood and have the same traits as some of them it still means you need to care for them and love them. For the kids that are adopted, they don't share the same blood with their parents so they obviously have to care about them in order to be a family. So I agree with the quote on having to care in order to have a family.

  4. To me, family is and always will be number one. They're the ones that will care for you no matter what the situation. But to me, it could be more than that. You could have a really good friend that could mean a lot to you. That friend could be considered to be so close that he/she could be considered a family member. So to me, personal opinion could contribute on what you think is or isn't a family member. If you feel like a best friend treats you better than a family member, there's no problem that you can think that. But you can't leave that family member out also. That person's still your blood, and should always be close in your heart

  5. I agree. You could look at this in a way like adopted children, their adoptive parents are more family to them then their birth parents. It's like deciding wether you have a house, or a home. A house is a place you live, but a home is a place where you're welcomed by people that care.
A person can call anyone family, if the bond is strong enough. A best friend can be a sister or brother to you. And someone else's parents can be as much of a parent to you as your own even.
It about who influences your life in the most positive ways, and always brings you up.
Look at the kids with abusive parents, who think their children are nothing more than dirt, there is no love there, they are not their parents.
Parents show them they care, they show them that they'd do anything to bring them up.

  7. To me family can be with people with the same blood and family can also be people without the same blood. Family are people who care about you and you care about them. Family should always be there for each other. I consider my best friends family. You can't control who has the same blood as you. You can control who you consider to be family if there friends. People who make you happy and you spend a lot of time with are considered family to me.

  8. Family to me is the people who care about you and is there for you. Your blood relatives are family, but they do not always feel like family. They aren't always around or even bother to call you. I live with my mom, so i'm around her more. She feels like family to me because she is there for me. I am closer with friends more than my family because they around me more, so they feel more like my family. Family doesn't feel like family just if you have the same blood, but the people who want to be in your life and around you like everyday.

  9. Family is what I believe to be special, It is nice to have a supporting family to help you through the hardest times. It is important to bond with your family, and to also be with them as much as you can. Holidays are the best ways to get family's together, it is a time to get together and to spend time with each other. Also family is a good source of love and support, but it also sucks when they live far away from you, or if you have to travel a far distance to see them. If your in jail and you need someone to bail you out, whos the first person you call? usually your mom or dad. Sometimes they won't do it, but if they do then thats because they love you. And thats wht family is all about, being there for each other and helping out. All in all family is very important and they won't be around forever. So it is best to spend time with them now than not spending time with them.

  10. I think family is who has your blood and very close friends can be considered family. Family is who you love and spend time with, family is forever. Not all families are the same. Some don't even know their (blood) family. My family gets together on holidays and special occasions. I love my family and wouldn't trade them for anything. No family is perfect. We argue, we fight, we even stop talking to each other sometimes, but in the end family is family. The love will always be there.

  11. Family. Family is the number one thing in your life. Family is people that are there for you wether you are blood related or not. They are there if you're feeling down. They're there for you are stuck in a corner and don't know what to to. To me, family is the most important thing to my life. Anyone that I care about is family to me. The people that I care about care about me too, just like family. Family is there with a shoulder for you to cry on if you need to. All in all, family is there for you no matter what...

  12. i feel that family is related to you by blood. i don't think that close friend are really considered family. if you have a crappy family who is never there for you its bad but its still kinda a family. family should be a special thing and you should be able to do anything for the people in your family. i guess you could consider your friends family if they are really close to you and their there more than your real family.

  13. I would have to agree with this quote. Because even though your not blood you could still have a person in your life. There are many people with different families that aren't blood because people and there good friends say to there parents they say I like you like one of my parents or your just like my parents. I love my family they mean the world to me blood family is always there, but sometimes not for blood related families.

  14. Family to me is all of your friends and neighbors, along with your actual family. Basically it is anybody who cares for you and watches out for you when you are in trouble. You should also help them out when they are in trouble or if they just need an extra hand. Some people have large families and some people have smaller families because they don't help others out when they are in trouble. However, even though you may consider them family, they still may make you mad and you may get into fights with them quite a bit. It is almost impossible to always get along with them.

  15. Family to me, is everything. I think that family is more then just blood relations. They are more then just people you see at Christmas and Thanksgiving. A family is always there for you, its not because they HAVE to be there for you. They WANT to be there for you. They want to be there for you because they love you. A family is full of love, and they have a lot more in common then just the blood that flows through their veins.

  16. You can be related to someone but not have a relationship there. One could be related to someone but not talk to them or see them. The people you care about and could be considered apart of your family because they are there for you. My dad has seven brothers and sister but they do not live close by. I am still related to them and I care about them to a certain extent. I would say that I care about some of my friends more than them. The reason I say that is because my friends are here and my relatives are not.

  17. Family is pretty important to me. To some people family is only blood, but to me it can be other things. To me caring alot about someone like a friend can make them family. Friends can be there for you just as much if not more than your family. My family is around for me alot but my friends at times are there way more for me and understand me better. either way weather someone is blood or just someone you know you should always treat them kindly and respectfully like your own blood.

  18. A family in the dictionary is a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. Family is much more then that in my eyes. Family is not just the people living in my household. Its everyone that I care about. For an example my teammates I'm not blood related to them, but they are still part of my family. I love my family I get along with everyone in my family and care about them. Your family will always be there for you, and that's just great!

  19. Family I feel are people that are not only there for you they care about you. They will help you when you have a problem or when you did something good like getting a good grade in school. Family is to be spending time together on holidays, birthdays and other special occasions. My family is not perfect, we fight, argue, and pick on each other a lot. That's how we get close I suppose. In the end we love each other and were always here for each other. Some times I just want my family to leave but in the end of the day we love each other a lot. And I don't know what I would do with out my family.

  20. To me family is someone that, first off you are brought up by. Your imediate family that you are raised by and people who raised them. In my eyes that doesn't define family. Family can be someone who is like a best friend or even a close family friend. Family should have a special bond that you don't get from just anyone. There should be different feeling and actions associated with family. Feelings that the random stranger doesn't get. Family should also be there for each other through hard times and good times. That is the biggest association i have with family because it is easy to walk out when there are hard times, but a true family will learn to cope and move on.

  21. Family is not just the people you were born to, they can also be people you care about outside your family. Family is basically anyone you consider yourself close to and share a bond, or love with. Family are people you can fight with but will still love in the end, you go to them for advice and counsel. When you need them they will always be there and you are there for them. Your family will always be growing, weither its your blood family or people outside your family you share a bond with. Some people have no family, some people hate their family, but if you have friends you will always have a family. 22. It doesn't matter whose in your family that you have the same blood with its about whose in your family that you care about. You could have family members that you don't get along with so you don't treat them like family. Some family members move away so they never see them so they would be considered separated because they dont care about them if they never meet them. Some families will fight and then makeup cause they realize that they are family and still care for each other. Family sticks together even through tough times. Its good for family to pick certain times of the year to meet up and catch up so they dont lose touch of each other. In the end family is family.

  23. To me, family is not who you're technically "related" too, but who you care about. For example, if you are adopted as a baby and taken care of two people your whole life, you will most likely consider them to be your family. Even though you're not blood related, you were still raised by them and love them for taking care of you. Also, if you have a really close friend that has been there for you whenever you needed them, you might consider them to be family. Regardless of who it is, if you love them and care about them, they are family to you. You're going to have ups and downs with you family, and probably fight a lot. At the end of the day however, family is always there for you, and you are always there for them. That is what makes a family.

  24. Family to me is more than just your blood line family. I think that overtime the friends you hang out with also become your family. I do not even know all of my relatives, so I don't think that I would call them my family. Most of my family gets together to catch up and celebrate during the holidays. Of course every family has its own set of problems. But I think that having problems helps define what a family actually is. I like my family a lot. AN I wouldn't ever think about trading them. So i believe that i would agree with Kyle's quote

  25. Family to me are people that i truly care about. A'lot of people think that family has to be blood related, but I believe that people that matter to you are family, such as my basketball team. Family members are the ones' that are there for you when you need help. This could even be a close friend, if they are willing to help you out when you need them the most or the other way around they would be considered family to me. Majority of families you hear about fighting, but then at the end of the day you still love them and that what really matters. Some families may seem a lot bigger than usual, but its just showing how much everyone cares for each other. No matter what you will always have family there for you.

  26. I believe South Park is right on this one. To me family could be someone blood related or not. It depends if the person cares about you like a family member should. In my family we don't even associate with one of my Aunts. She doesn't show up for Christmas or Thanksgiving. Shes is my God mother and she didn't even come to my Baptism. My family has friends that we consider family. So I agree with Kyle's quote.

  27. Family doesn't end with blood. For more reasons than one. My mother was adopted but my grandmother is still my grandmother and I love her. The people whom I trust, love and would die for are my family. My friends are my family. Any animal that I love is my family. With a lot of cases there are those "blood" relatives whom hate you or don't even associate with you. Even though they are blood, I absolutely do not consider them family. I'll stick with the term family with the people who love and care about me. We keep each other human.

  28. To me family are the people closes to you. It don't matter if your blood related or just really close. I consider my closes friends to be family and even some of my pets. I don't really consider some of my relatives as family because I don't really know a lot of them. My close family gets together for holidays and other special events and even some times just to see each other. Im always doing something with my friends so to me they are family to. So I do agree with the quote at the top.

  29. I feel as if family is anyone you are close with or closely associated with. Even if they aren't blood related, they can still be family. But also their is family that you could consider not your family. If they betray you or your distant with them.I feel as if my closest friends are some of my closest family. They know me better than anyone else does. They support me when others won't. So that's what I think family is, It's the people that are their supporting you when everyone else gives up hope and runs away from you.

  30. I believe that your family involves all the people in your life who have helped you in a significant way. The ones who have been there for you whenever you need them are a part of your family. Kayla Kyle has almost always been there for me when I really needed someone. I consider her my sister. She has helped me get through some of the toughest times in my life. I think family is there to share the bad times as well as the very good times.
