Kite Runner Journal Prompt #2

Chapter 7 in The Kite Runner is a pivotal moment in not only plot development, but also character development. This is an event, as Amir expressed in the opening chapter, that haunts Amir well into his adult life. Try to imagine yourself in Amir's position; how might you have responded. Keep Assef's threat to get even with both Amir and Hassan in mind. Also consider your thoughts on friendship from your post in Journal #1 in your decision.

Why does Amir say that he is both a hero and a coward during Chapter 7? What are some options Amir could have had? What does this situation say of Amir's "friendship" with Hassan? What do you think may happen as a result? How might the rape play into the overall plot development?

Respond with a minimum of EIGHT sentences. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, and conventions.

  1. Amir is a hero because he won the kite tournament. Hassan and his father look at Amir like a whole different person or like a hero since he won. Amir is a coward because he never sticks up for Hassan. He needs to realize what Hassan has done for him. Hassan goes completely out of his way for Amir, but Amir does nothing for Hassan. I think that sometime in the book the friendship between Hassan and Amir will end. Amir's true feelings about Hassan will come out.

I think that the rape is going to change Amir's and Hassan's relationship. Amir did not stick up for Hassan. Instead he stayed hidden. This is going to change the relationship between the two majorly. Especially if Hassan finds out that Amir was there and did not do anything.

  2. Amir was not scared to try something new. But, he was also a coward/wimp because he was afraid to show his best friend/servant (hassan) to his other friends. It was kind of like peer pressure. He didn't want Assef and his gang to think he was lame and only played with his servant. He got so caught up with popularity, he almost said that Hassan wasn't his friend. What this says about Amirs friendship with Hassan is that he is so embarrassed of him that he almost said he wasn't his friend out loud. I think with this, Hassan will find out and lose all of his respect for him. And then just simply be his servant and nothing more.

  3. Amir thinks he is a hero because he did more than he can. He is a coward because he didn't save Hassan. He should have save Hassan. Get the kite himself. Ran with Hassan to get the kite. Hassan is a caring man. Amir likes him because Hassan does almost everything for him. Amir would change for him.

  4. Amir says he is a coward because he didn't help Hassan when he needed help. Amir also thinks he is a hero during Chapter 7 because he impresses his father by winning the kite contest, therefore seeing himself as a hero through his fathers eyes. Amir had the option to help Hassan, but instead he watched from afar as his friend was abused. This situation says that Amir actually isn't a true friend to Hassan because a true friend would not have let that happen to his friend. I think Hassan will realize that Amir actually isn't his true friend. I feel like that's just the beginning of the many things that will start to happen. I feel like the rape is not the worst thing that will happen to Hassan. I also think that Assef will get revenge on Amir.

  5. Amir is both a coward and a hero because he did win the kite tournament but he stayed hidden while Assef raped Hassan. Amir could have stepped out from the shadows and rescued Hassan from what happened. He could have showed Assef and his followers that he really is Hassans friend instead of hiding. This proves that everything Assef said about Amir only noticing Hassan when no one is around is true. I think that this could change Amir and Hassans whole friendship. If Hassan finds out that Amir stood there and did nothing it could ruin everything that they had. It could destroy the loyalty that Hassan has for Amir. And like Assef said, he will get revenge on both of them. He got Hassan so AMir could still be in trouble.

  6. Well I think that Amir is a hero because he won the kite tournament which then led to impressing his father. But in a way could be considered a coward because he didn't bother helping Hassan when he needed help. Instead he just watched Hassan being abused. So Amir is practically showing Hassan that they aren't friends. I personally think that there is still a lot more to come and this is just the beginning. I have a feeling that Hassan is going to want revenge.

  7. He thinks that he is a hero because he won the kite tournament and gained some respect throw his fathers eyes. He is also a coward tho because he could have stuck up for Hassan but instead he just stayed in the shadows. I think this will put a stain on their so called friendship especially if Hassan finds out that Amir just stood in the shadows and did nothing. I think the rape is not the worst thing that is going to happen to Hassan. The worst thing that is going to happen to Hassan is he is going to find out Amirs true feelings toward him and that is going to devastate him mentally.

  8. Amir is a hero because he won the kite contest and impressed his father.
Amir is a coward because he didn't help Hassan as he was getting attacked by the guys. He thinks he could have done more but he didn't. Amir could have went to go get someone to help. Or he could have went to go fight the people, but instead he decided to run away and act like nothing happened. The situation just shows that Amir doesn't consider Hassan a real friend. I think Amir feels guilty for not helping Hassan. Hassan isn't going to be the same anymore.

  9. I feel that Amir would have helped Hassan, he was just afraid that something would happen to him too. I think Amir and Hassan are friends, Amir is just too embarrassed to admit it. I think that the rape will change Hassan's and Amir's friendship because if Hassan finds out that Amir stood there and watched it happen he will not want to be Amr's friend anymore.

  10. Amir would have helped Hassan, he just was scared that as soon as he helped Hassan they would have turned on him.The rape will definitely change the friendship with one another.Because if Hassan was to find out that Amir was there and watched it happen to him he would feel betrayed by Amir.

  11. Amir thinks he is a hero because he won the kite competition. He thinks he is a coward because he runs away from the boys raping Hassan. Amir had more options than just running away. He could have stopped it himself, or at least tried. He could have found someone and told them, because even though Hassan was a Hazara, they were still breaking Islam code. Amir's friendship with Hassan must not have meant much to him, he didn't really prove that there even was one there. If I were in the same situation I would try my hardest to get that to stop, I would do anything, and I hope that my friends would do the same. I think that their friendship, or whatever they had, will be strained, things are going to be awkward now. I think more things are going to play out now, the boys didn't get even with Amir yet.

  12. 'Try to imagine being in Amir's position....' If I were in Amir's position during these chapters I would have reacted differently to the rape. I would have stood up for Hassan, unlike Amir. In chapter seven Hassan, Baba, and Amir all think of Amir as a hero because he won the Kite Running competition. Amir also admits that he is a coward because he never stood up for Hassan and he only stood and watched Assef rape him. That is not friendship. Amir and Hassans friendship is going to be going downhill soon; you can tell this because of two things, Hassan stopped smiling after the surgery and he will sooner or later find out that Amir saw the entire rape (Chapter 7). If Amir distances himself from Hassan because of his guilt then things will only get worse. The rape is going to come between the two and they will not be close any longer and will probably get separated at some point.

  13. Amir possibly thinks that he is a hero because if he had done something to stop the rape it would have been worse than was already happening. But he is a coward because he chose not to do anything to help Hassan. Me personally I would have at least tried to stop it not sit there and watch. Amir might not think of Hassan as a friend but friend or not this can't happen. However, Hassan was still loyal and brought Amir his trophy kite. But now I think things are going to be awkward because there is a possibility that Hassan saw Amir just sitting there. Eventually they will not be friends at all, or Amir might just break down and beg for Hassan's forgiveness. But only being chapter seven there is going to be a lot more happening in this book.

  14. I think that Amir is a hero because he won the kite tournament and he also impressed his father. He is a coward because he doesn't stick up for Hassan. Hassan does everything for him and he does not realize what he all has done. When Amir seen that Hassan was getting raped, did he nothing. Now Amir has to live with that guilt. Eventually, Hassan will find out and I think that they will not be friends anymore.

  15. I feel like Amir is both a hero and a coward. He could have stood up for Hassan, but he didn't because Assef might have come and attacked him. But if he had been a hero, he could have made the situation worse for Hassan. I think he was just scared of all the different things that could have potentially happened. One does not think straight in those situations, so he probably didn't think he had very many options at all. I know what happens because of the situation, so I won't say anything about that. But it plays into the overall plot because Assef DID say that he would attack Hassan and Amir when they were alone.

  16. Amir calls himself a hero and a coward, because on one hand, he won the kite tournament, but on the other he stood by while his friend got raped. I don't think Amir has the right to call himself a hero whatsoever. Someone who stands by and does nothing while someone is being victimized in that way, or any way for that matter, is nothing but a coward. Amir had options, but he chose not to do anything. If he was too scared to do anything himself, the least he could have done was found someone else to help. A true friend would have done something to help. This event proves that Amir is very self-centered/scared/incompetent person. If Amir honestly considered Hassan a friend, he would have done something. I think that the situation not only take a huge, life shattering tole, on Hassan's life, but also on the "friendship". I think that it will also dramatically effect the plot of the story. It will probably strongly influence the rest of the book.

  17. Amir is a hero because he won the kite tournament. He is a coward because he did not do anything to stop Assef from raping Hassan. When Hassan would have done anything for Amir. Amir could have stepped in and stopped Assef from raping Hassan. I think Amir was just afraid of Assef hurting him so he did not step in and help Hassan. Hassan would have stepped in and helped Amir if it was the other way around. Amir starts to feel really guilty and he stops talking to Hassan. That ruins their friendship.

  18. He thinks he is a hero for winning the kite tournament and a coward for doing nothing to help Hassan, but Hassan would do absolutely anything for Amir. He could have stepped in and helped Hassan from being raped, he could have went and got someone to help. Amir is not a true friend to Hassan, he sat there and let him get raped. I don't think anything will happen because Amir will be to afraid to tell anyone. Someone will soon find out and do something about it.

  19. Amir is a hero because he did win the kite tournament. He got to impress his father and show him that he can do things good. Amir is a coward because he did nothing to help Hassan. He just watched him get raped by Assef. Amir could have done something. He could have stepped in and done something to make them stop, but instead he watched and then ran off. Even when he ran off he could have told somebody and asked them to help. If the roles were reversed Hassan would have stepped in and tried to help him. This is going to put a strain on the friendship because Amir is going to start feeling guilty that he didn't say anything. I think that this is going to play a strong role on the book and on their friendship for the rest of the book.

  20. He might say those things because he finally wins something and makes his father proud. Also he is a coward because someone very important and basically family has something horrible happen to them and he does nothing to prevent it. He could have asked Rahim Khan to go look for Hassan because he could have done something to help Hassan out. Hassan has been the only one putting in effort. Defending Amir no matter what but once its the other way around Amir doesn't do anything. Hassan ends up finding out that Amir was there but didn't help him in any way. It might be what ends up tearing Amir and Hassan apart after all their years together. It's something that Amir will forever regret because he could have spoken up but didn't.

  21. If I were in Amir's position I would have helped Hassan. Him standing there watching his friend get raped was cowardly. Even if Amir was not going to help Hassan himself, he could have gone and got help quick. If the tables were turned Hassan would have helped him, but Amir wouldn't do it for him. Thats not a very good friend. And I think their friendship will fall apart because of this. When Amir is in a tough spot and needs Hassan, he won't be there. Karma will play a role in this.

  22. If i was Amir in that position i would of done something besides just sit there and watch. If he couldn't of helped he could of found someone to help instead of nothing. Now there friendship will never be the same because of this. Now Amir will start felling guilty about what happened.

  23. Amir became a hero to a lot of people, especially his dad and Hassan, when he won the kite flying contest. His father was finally proud of him for something. But Amir changed things for the worst and became a coward when he saw Hassan being raped, and did nothing to prevent it. This goes to show that Amir doesn’t look at Hassan like a real friend, even though Hassan would do anything for Amir. The rape showed that Amir won’t help Hassan, but after it all, Hassan knowing that Amir was there, will still do anything to protect Amir.

  24. Amir thinks he is a hero because he did more than he can. Get the kite himself. Ran with Hassan to get the kite. Hassan is a caring person and Amir treats Hassan like crap even when hassan lied to baba about stealing the watch and money. Amir should give hassan more respect .

  25. Amir can be considered a hero due to him wining the kite thing. It was very important to him and his father. Although those reasons make him a hero, the heroism can be overshadowed by his cowardice when he knew he could have helped Hassan, but failed to do so. This shows that Amir had never truly considered himself a friend to Hassan, despite their relationship beforehand. With the awful things done to Hassan that Amir did nothing to help, I think their relationship will never be the same, even though Hassan hopes it will. I think this can lead to much trouble for Hassan in the next chapters.

  26. Amir considered himself as a hero because he won the kite contest. He also considered himself a coward because he didn't help Hassan. Instead of being the coward he is, he could have helped Hassan instead of him getting tortured. He could have stood up for him and helped him out instead of worrying about what was going to happen to him. He's so worried himself about then others. I would think that Amir isn't a true friend to Hassan. Hassan would do anything for Amir but Amir wouldn't do the same. I think their friendship won't be the same since what happened to Hassan. I think Amir will avoid Hassan because of guilt. I also think their friendship will fall to pieces.

  27. I strongly believe that Amir was hero when he won the kit contest. He was also a big coward because he didn't help Hassan when he was raped by Assef. Also if Amir was a true friend he would have told Assef to back off and leave Hassan alone. That is what a true friend would do if they say that one was getting bullied. Even though it my not be that easy to do they would still do it.
